In India going on a pilgrimage is the way to cleanse your soul. Its also one of the best ways of seeing beautiful places in India, places that you may not think generally when you think of holidays. These places will take you to the Himalayas, the abode of Gods. Pilgrimages in India to Himalayas have started from the earliest recorded history of Indian civilization and you will find mention of these pilgrimages in the Holy Scriptures. Of the pilgrimages in India the pilgrimage to CharDham or the Char Dham Yatra, occupies a place of great prestige. These four holy places on which the name Yatra Char Dham is based are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath.
Char Dham Yatra generally starts from the temple town of Haridwar. There are other departures as well from Rishikesh or Dehra Doon. The order ion which you visit the four holy places is Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Yamunotri is the origin of the Yamuna River. Its a days journey whether you go from Rishikesh, Haridwar or Dehradun. You can reach the temple finally by a six km walk or by a palanquin or on horseback. You can offer your puja through the priests. You must see how the raw rice is cooked with boiling water from the hot springs and used for the puja. The other destinations on the Yatra Char Dham are Gangotri, the origin of the mighty Ganges; Kedarnath worshipped as the abode of the great Shiva and Badrinath the home of Vishnu in his incarnation as Badrinarayan.
